Anatomical heart with octopus tentacles
Black and grey · Flash
A detailed ink drawing of a human heart with its vessels visible, with several octopus tentacles curling around and over it. The linework uses fine hatching and stippling to build shading along the tentacles and the chambers of the heart. The design is shown in black on a plain white background, with the composition centred and the tentacles extending outwards at the edges.

You are the last apprentice aboard the salvage hulk Greywater when the tide-signal changes pitch, and Mother Okonedo tells you to stop counting the sealed hatches and go down to the cold deck. The reef below the old city has begun to pulse. Every instrument on the rig says so, and the sonar hums with a rhythm no one has taught the crew. She hands you a wrench the length of your forearm and a sealed glass canister holding something that was once a pump, and says only, hold it steady, it still remembers how to beat.

The cold deck smells of brine and burnt copper. Down through the grating you can see the drowned ventricle the crew pulled up last winter, its chambers opened like a shuttered house, its great vessels still threaded with pale cable. Around it, moving without wind, the arms of the thing that lives in the reef curl and tighten. Each sucker flexes in turn, and each one, when you look close, carries the faint print of a lens, as if the creature has been watching the crew through the shells of their own machines for longer than anyone has been counting.
When the chamber finally fills with a steady pulse, Okonedo lays her palm flat on the glass and nods. You understand then that the salvage was never about the metal. You knock the canister twice against the rail, as she taught you, and feel the answering throb climb up through your boots. Somewhere under the hull, something larger than the ship turns over in its sleep, and for the first time in your life you are not afraid of the sea.
