Neo-trad · Colour · Photo

A three-panel photograph of a colour tattoo showing a female character with a wolf-pelt headdress, red goggles, red face markings and a knife held in her teeth, with a necklace of claws and a teal stone. The right panel shows a pale forest spirit with large dark eyes sitting among teal leaves. Bold dark outlines, smooth shading and saturated red, gold, teal and skin tones give it a strong, vivid look.

The pack had taught Oda to bite before she learned to read, so when the ore men came up the valley with their cutters, she did not reach for a spear. She took the knife from her belt, clamped the handle between her teeth, and climbed the old cable tower where the rust had grown a skin of moss.

Below her the clearing was thick with ferns and the pale little ones who lived in the roots of the fallen pines. Mother Ashe called them kodama, though nobody alive had seen one grow up. They only came out when the trees were quiet, and they had gone quiet three nights before, when the drills started on the ridge.

The foreman, a thin man named Bracken who wore goggles the colour of old brass, stood on the lip of the cut and laughed when he saw a girl with a wolf skin over her head. 'Bring me the bones,' he said. 'The wolves can have the rest.' Oda spat the knife into her hand, and the claws on her necklace clicked against the teal stone the valley folk had given her for surviving a winter.

She did not fight him. She sang the low note the pines hum before a storm, and the little ones came up out of the roots by the hundred, leaves stuck to their heads, and sat down in front of the drills like a crowd at a wake. The engines idled. Bracken stared at them until his goggles fogged, then climbed back into his cart and went down the valley road without a word. Oda pulled the knife from the cable where she had driven it and walked home to supper.
