The rain had been falling on the hill for three days when the two stags came down through the bracken to the water meadow, still locked at the crown. Nobody in Hollin Dale had seen a fight last so long. The old shepherd, Abel Fenwick, watched from the wall with his collar turned up and counted the breaths between their snorts, forty, then forty again.

By the second morning the stags had worn a ring in the mud. Their tines had stripped the bark from a hawthorn and frayed the rope of a dropped gate chain. The ewes gave them room. Abel's granddaughter, Nell, brought bread and a flask of tea to the wall, and they argued about whether it was cruelty to let them be or cruelty to try to part them.

On the third morning the rain stopped and the meadow began to steam. One stag had gone grey around the muzzle. The other lay down on its side in the wet grass. Neither had won. The antlers came apart with a sound like a dropped plank, and each animal stood, looked at the other across a gap no wider than a man's hand, and walked off in opposite directions, leaving a line of hoof prints, dotted and deep, that curved from one side of the field to the other.

Nell pressed her palm into one print and watched it fill with water. "They'll find each other again," she said. Abel said nothing, but he took off his cap and let the rain run over his head, because the arc was the only thing left in the field that still held the shape of what the two of them had been.
