Antlered geometric figure on a lower leg
Geometric · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A man's head with a moustache and closed eyes, topped with branching antlers, is built from faceted geometric shapes filled with dark dotted and hatched shading. The figure's raised hand and roots trailing downwards are drawn in fine black linework, with a small orange sun behind the antlers and touches of red at the base. The design fills the centre of the frame on skin with other tattoos partly visible at the bottom edge.

The stag stood on the lock beam at first light, antlers combed with green weed, and Dennis raised his hand to it as if it were a lock-keeper he owed money to. I was too busy with the paddles to ask him why. The Lessing Cut had been dry for a week, and the water came up brown and slow, smelling of roots.

Dennis had worked these boats since he was a lad, and he never once spoke about the wood that ran beside the towpath, the one the maps left blank. He said only that a man could walk into the trees after the sun went orange behind the poplars and find a branch too far down the bank, roots reaching for his boots like the fingers of something asleep. Pritchard's boy went in after a dropped mooring pin in '51. They found his cap hung neatly on a willow, the way you'd hang it on a peg.
That evening we moored at Hobb's Bridge and Dennis went ashore with his pipe and his good coat. I watched the sun sink red through the branches, bright as a coin in a fountain. He came back before the lamps were lit, mud to the knees, grinning like a boy. 'Went to say thank you,' he said. 'For the water.' I asked him what he meant, and he only pulled his cap down over ears that had gone very pink.
In the morning the towpath was empty and his boots stood side by side on the bank, laced tight, with fine pale roots already threading up through the eyelets.
