Art Nouveau woman with flowers on a back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A woman in a flowing green dress stands among vines and stems, with red blossoms in her hair and a stylised flower design beside her. The linework is bold and outlined, with soft shading in the drapery and skin. Muted greens, reds and yellows fill the composition, which runs diagonally across the upper back.

Dear Nell, you will laugh, but the painter lady has finally finished with the roses on the south wall, and this morning she asked me to hold the stepladder while she drew the vine that climbs her skirt. I told her no vine in England grows like that. She said the vine was drawn first in Paris by a man who had never seen one either, and that was the whole point of it.

She stands in the old green dress she keeps for sitting, her hair piled with red flowers she pinched from the dahlia bed, one hand up on the trellis as if she means to pull the whole thing down. Each morning she makes me hold a bramble stem against her hip so she can get the leaves right. The thorns caught my wrist on Tuesday and I bled onto the sketchbook, and she said that would do nicely for the berries.
Yesterday she showed me the face she had been working on. It is not her face. She says it belongs to Ivy Marr, the girl who used to carry the post up the hill, who went to London in March with a cardboard suitcase and a promise to write. Nobody in the village has had a letter, and the postmistress swears none has come through the office.
I have left the ladder against the wall tonight so the frost does not get the last of the blooms. If anything arrives for Ivy Marr, I will bring it to you before I bring it up to the painter. Your loving brother, Sam.
