Lettering · Back · Colour · Photo

The tattoo spells AUTISM vertically, with each capital letter in a different bright colour and a matching script phrase beside it: Always, Unique, Totally, Intelligent, Sometimes, Mysterious. Five puzzle pieces in red, blue, yellow, purple and green surround the lettering. The thin, fluid script and solid colour fills are clearly defined, and the design sits centred across the upper back.

Nobody on Harrowgate Lane could fit a jigsaw together faster than Nan Pritchard's grandson, and he never once asked anyone to watch. Ellis sat on the lino by the window with the box lid propped against the skirting board, sorting edges into one pile and sky into another, murmuring to himself whenever a piece turned the wrong way up.

The puzzle had come from the church jumble stall, a thousand pieces of a lighthouse on a grey sea. Half the street had told Nan it was too much for a boy of nine. She poured her tea from the flask and let him be. By teatime the lighthouse stood whole on the table, all except one lower corner, which had gone missing in the move from the old flat.

Ellis searched the carpet, the tin of buttons, the gap behind the radiator. In the end Nan found the piece herself, pressed flat inside the lid where it had slid during the journey. It was blue, the exact blue of the lighthouse door, and when Ellis slotted it home he stood up and looked at the whole thing for a long time without speaking.

Then he took the crayons from the biscuit tin and, down the edge of the box lid, printed one word in capitals, a different colour for each letter. Beside each letter he wrote a true thing about the lighthouse: Lantern, Iron stairs, Gulls, Hushed bay, Ever turning. Nan read it twice and pinned it to the fridge, where it stayed until the paper went soft at the corners.
