Bat and blossom on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A bat with spread wings hangs from the top of the design, with its head turned to the left, beside pink five-petalled flowers, clusters of small white berries and green leaves. The bat is shaded in black and grey with fine detail on the wing membranes, while the flowers and foliage are rendered in soft colour. The design wraps across the outer thigh, with the bat in the upper section and the botanical elements spreading down the lower half.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Snow had sealed the Hollin Gate pass for three days, and the Drover's Rest was full of people who had stopped pretending to be patient. Maud Pardoe counted candles in the kitchen while the wind worked at the shutters. Above the stairs, in the eaves, something had been hanging since October, folded in its own wings like a shut umbrella.

Tobias Reeve, the carter's boy, came in stamping with a branch under his arm, and pink blossom was already loosening in the warm air of the kitchen. Where did you get that, Maud asked. Old Hob's orchard, under the bank where the snow never settles, he said, and he would not look at her while he said it. She did not believe him until the petals began drifting onto the flagstones, one by one, as if someone upstairs were shaking them loose.

She climbed the ladder with the branch in one hand and a cup of warm milk in the other, feeling foolish. The bat dropped from the beam with a sound like damp linen being shaken, opened its wings to their full spread, and turned its pointed face towards the flowers. It took a single petal from the tip of the branch, considered it, and folded itself back into the dark.

By morning the pass was open and the carters were cursing the drifts. Maud left the branch in the window where the light fell through the glass. When she went up to check the beam, the eaves were empty, but a few white berries lay on the boards in a neat little line, and the window latch had been left open a crack for whatever might want to come back in.
