Bees and botanical bouquet on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A ring of detailed bees sits above a bundle of herbs, leaves and flowers, including a bloom at the lower left and a small bird-like form among the foliage. Fine linework and stippled shading give the bees and plants depth, while fine dotted lines form a large diamond frame around the whole design. The piece is entirely in black ink and greys and fills the outer thigh of a person wearing striped shorts.

The bees came to Marrowgate the winter the bridge flooded, and nobody in the lamplit streets knew where they had come from. Old Hesper Kell said they had followed the smoke of the bakery ovens down from the hills, and the baker's wife said it was nonsense, but she let them in anyway. They hung in a ring above the market well, wings folded, a crown of small grey lanterns that did not move at night.

In the spring the night-watchman, Tobiah Rook, noticed the herbs. Someone had been bundling rosemary, thyme and yarrow at the foot of the cathedral steps, tied with red wool, and every bundle had a single white bloom pushed into its knot. Nobody admitted to it. The bees hummed when a bundle was lifted, and the humming meant the bundle was taken to the right house, and the right house was never the house that asked.

Tobiah walked the city each night for thirty years and never once saw the hand that tied them. On the last night he was rostered, a bird no bigger than a thumb landed on his lantern and tilted its head, as though checking the time. He followed it through the dark to the flooded quarter, where a bundle of herbs lay on the step of a house with no door. He set it down beside the others. The bees above the well stirred, all at once, and settled again, and the city went on sleeping under them.
