Biomechanical skull design sketch
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a skull with an open, snarling jaw and teeth, surrounded by sculpted organic shapes that look like bone, muscle or machine parts. Shading is built up in pencil with strong contrast between deep blacks and light greys, giving the forms a three-dimensional look. A bolt or nail sits at the top left, with flame-like spikes above the skull, and the composition fills a tall portrait sheet.

The lift at Haldane House had been stuck between the ninth and tenth floors since Tuesday, and by Friday Ray Dunmore could hear it breathing. It was a wet, ratcheting sound that came up the shaft whenever the building settled, like something large turning over in its sleep behind the steel. He'd been sent up with a torch, a flask of tea going cold, and a clipboard nobody had signed for in years.

The machine room sat under the roof, reached by a ladder bolted to the stairwell wall. Someone had welded a casing over the drive gear, and at one end the casing had been cut into a wide, grinning mouth of ribbed plates. Old repair sparks had scorched the paint black in long tongues that licked up the housing. Ray shone the torch inside. Behind the jaw, the pulley wheel turned slowly, and every few revolutions the whole mouth clacked shut on nothing.
He found the bolt on the grating beneath the drive, rusted and fat as a thumb, fallen from the frame. It had been holding the lower plate in place. He fitted it back by feel, cursing the cold, and turned the wrench until the metal stopped chewing. Down the shaft the cables went quiet. The lift sank with a sigh and a bump, and the doors opened on the tenth floor to a woman with a pushchair who said nothing about the wait.
Ray climbed down with bolt dust on his palms. On the way out he noticed the scorch marks had cooled to a dull shine, and the teeth in the casing looked, for the first time, like they had been set to hold. He wrote the job up as a seized bearing and went home.
