Bird and camellia branch on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small songbird sits on a dark branch that runs up the forearm, with peach and orange camellia blossoms and green-tinged leaves framing it above and below. The bird and branch are shaded with fine tonal gradations, while the flowers are softly washed with translucent warm colour that fades into the skin. The composition is vertical along the arm, with the bird at the centre and the blossoms balancing the design top and bottom.

The camellias came out early that year, before the frost had properly loosened its grip on the lane, and Marta Oyelaran took it as a sign that the old woman at the edge of Harrowfield would not last the month. She carried the basket up the path anyway, past the stile and the leaning hazels, with a loaf wrapped in muslin and a jar of honey that had crystallised in the cold.

The cottage door stood open. Inside, the grate was cold and a songbird sat on the sill, russet-backed and unbothered, watching her with one bright eye as if it had been expecting her. Mrs Fenwick lay propped on the settle with a shawl over her knees. Her hands were spotted and still, but her voice had lost none of its edge. "You've brought the honey wrong," she said. "It should be spring honey for a spring visitor."
Marta laughed, and the bird lifted from the sill and flew to the branch she had tucked into a jug by the window, a slender black twig with two pale blossoms still clinging to it. It settled there as if it owned the thing. "Your brother cut that for you," Marta said. "Didn't he?"
"He did. Before he went off to the coast and forgot the way back." Mrs Fenwick turned her head towards the window. "Camellias bloom when they've a mind to, not when we want them. That bird knows it. Sits right where he's told and waits."
They sat together until the light went copper across the floorboards. When Marta stood to leave, the bird did not follow her. It stayed on the branch beside the old woman, and in the morning, the blossoms outside the door had opened all at once, peach and gold, as though someone had lit them.
