Birds and bare tree on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bare, leafless tree rises up the forearm with its branches spreading outwards, and a flock of black birds scatters upwards from near the wrist. Below the trunk, a dense dark forest fades into the lower forearm. The linework is bold silhouette with soft grey shading in the treeline, shown in black ink on pale skin against a textured carpet.

He got as far as the third fork before the rooks came. They rose out of the treeline below him in a black spill, more of them than he thought the forest could hold, and they did not scatter the way frightened birds do. They wheeled once around the trunk, then settled on the branches in a line, each one turning its head to look at him with the flat patience of the miller's wife at market.
'Take what you came for,' the nearest one said, in his grandmother's voice. He nearly lost his grip. He had buried her at Candlemas. The rooks told him where the old bell lay hidden under the mill race, which of the village men had let the wolves into the sheepfold years ago for a wager, and the name of the girl who walked into the trees and never came out. They told him everything except what to do with it.
He carried the saw home unused. The next morning the new gate was hung on posts of fresh pine, and the ash stood at the forest edge with its branches thick with birds. Whenever someone in Harrowby Fold went to tell a lie, the flock rose all at once and drowned them out.
