Black and grey cross with flame details
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A large cross tattoo fills most of the frame, with a bold outline and a flared, pointed design. Its arms contain small inset cross motifs, and flame-like tribal shapes curl out from the sides. The shading is black and grey, with soft gradients on the cross body and sharp black linework on the outer edges.

The bell at Hollin Cross had not rung since the flood, so when the old schoolmaster's widow asked for it to be rung for the reunion, the village men took the ladder up to the belfry and found the rope gone brittle as bread. Mary Tennant walked up the lane with a tin of boiled sweets and a list of names, and she read the names out loud at the churchyard gate, one by one, the way her mother had read the register. Nobody answered to Ruth Pilling, though the vicar's wife swore she had seen her at the mill in March.

They gathered under the lych gate in the afternoon, forty-odd of them, grey where they had been brown and stooped where they had been straight. The flame-shaped marks on the stone of the gatepost had been there as long as anyone remembered, and they were darker than the wet stone around them. Old Eli Gorst said they were scorch marks from the year the lightning came down on the oak, and his sister said they were the shape of the cross on the schoolroom door, and neither could be proved.
When the light went behind the moor, Mary took a pencil from her pocket and drew a small cross in the damp on the gatepost, the arms tipped with little squares like windows. Ruth Pilling stepped out from the mill road with flour on her coat, laughed at the lot of them, and took the last sweet from the tin. The bell did not ring, but the rope moved once against the tower wall, as if someone had tugged it from the other side to be sure they had come.
