Black and grey floral bouquet on a shoulder

Traditional · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large floral bouquet tattoo covers the shoulder and upper back, showing a central peony-style bloom with a wide open flower to the left and smaller blossoms and leaves around them. The linework is bold and dark, with soft grey shading inside the petals and leaves that gives the flowers depth. The image is a close, slightly angled photo of the shoulder, with a white top at the lower edge and a plain pale background.

The lift had been dead since Easter, so Nell carried the peony root up nine flights in a bucket wrapped in wet newspaper, stopping on every landing to let her heart settle. Behind the bins at the bbottom of Harrow Court there had been a market garden once, the old men said, before the concrete came down over it like a lid.

On the ninth floor she found the balcony rail already crowded. Anemones leaned through the railings, dark-centred and bold as ink, and a grey-haired woman from flat 41 was pinching off dead heads with her fingernails. "They come up where they like," the woman said. "You can't plant them. You can only ask."

Nell asked. She set the root in a tin of council soil, sang the one song her grandmother had sung over bean rows, and went to bed. By morning the leaves had unfolded and the bloom was the size of a fist, heavy and ruffled, the colour of weather about to break.

The housing officer came in April with a spray can to paint over the green scrawl on the stairwell wall. He found the peony pushing through a crack in the landing and stood there a long time with the can in his hand. Then he capped it and went down the stairs slower than he had come up, and the bloom stayed where it was, looking out over the car park as if it had always owned the view.
