Black and grey roses on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A woman lies on a white bed in lace lingerie, showing a large black and grey tattoo of several roses with leaves and stems running from the upper thigh down towards the knee. The roses use soft shading and fine outlines, and a smaller leafy sprig sits near the hip beside the underwear. The image is composed from a close, angled view with no colour ink, and the face is not visible.

Your master wants the garden wall finished before the vintner's daughter's wedding, and you have two days, a pot of lamp-black thinned with wine, and a brush of squirrel hair that has already lost half its bristles. The room at the back of the house in Pompeii faces east, so the morning light comes in pale and flat, and you learn to paint what the light will do rather than what it does now. Shadows first, then the outlines, then the leaves that cross the stems like sentences that refuse to end.

The roses are the hard part. Everyone in the street wants red, and your master's patron wants red too, but the pigment merchant from Puteoli sold you a bad batch of cinnabar and the money is spent. So you paint in grey. You press the brush into the curl of each petal, lift it, press again, until the flower seems to open slowly as you watch, the way a rose opens when nobody is looking. The cook's boy stands behind you and asks why they are not coloured. You tell him the walls are for remembering, and roses are easier to remember when they are not shouting.
On the second morning the dog from next door comes in through the open gate and sits on the threshold, watching you finish the last sprig near the doorframe, the one you meant to leave bare. You add three leaves in the lowest corner, small and dark, where a visitor would have to kneel to find them. Then you wipe your hands on the rag, pick up your satchel, and walk home without looking back at the wall, because the wall already knows what it is.
