Dear Nan, the wind has been up for three days and the Morwenna Rose has not seen the inside of Newlyn harbour since Tuesday. We are working the grounds off the Lizard, which is a long way out for a boat of her age, and Skipper Trewin says the pots will keep if we keep at them. I have learned to splice wire without bleeding on it, and I have learned that the cook, Dougie, hums hymns when he is frightened, which I shall not tell his mother.

The swell comes in under the hull like something turning over in its sleep, and the net drum sings when it runs. Last night the deck was all weed and silver and the lamps made long stripes across the water. I stood by the rail with a bucket of bait and thought of the ironwork on your gate, the curls and sprigs you used to trace with your finger when you thought I was asleep. I have been drawing them on the back of the tally book. Nobody here has asked what they are.

When we come in on Saturday I will bring the drawings round and you can tell me which of them is wrong. Trewin says the price for crab is better at Penzance, so we may go there instead, but I will walk to yours regardless. Keep the kettle warm. If the gate still sticks, lift it by the middle bar as Grandad showed me, and do not let the cat out on the step.
