Blue-haired woman with ship and wave

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A profile drawing of a woman with voluminous blue hair wrapped in a red bandana, with a sailing ship and a curling wave worked into the hairstyle. Bold black outlines and flat blue, red, and skin-toned fills give it a neo-traditional look, and small tattoo designs of a cat, cross, diamond and heart sit on the neck and chest. A red rose is placed at the lower left against a plain pale wood background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Frost had kept the lane white since Tuesday, and Maud had not once taken the tractor down it. She stood at the gate in her father's red neckerchief, watching the ploughed field beyond the hedge heave like a grey sea, and thought about the schooner on the dresser indoors, its paper sails gone the colour of weak tea.

Her father had carved it the winter the cattle sickness came, when there was nothing to do but wait for the vet's van and keep the stove fed. He said a ship was only a barn that had learned to swim. When the van finally came and took the herd, she shut herself in the dairy and would not come out until he knocked. The schooner stayed on the dresser after that, beside the tea caddy he had painted with a blue wave curling over a single red rose.

That morning she had taken the schooner down and wrapped it in a tea towel. Now she knelt on the frozen puddle at the field's edge, where the ice was thick enough to hold a stone but not a grown woman's grief. She set the ship down and gave it a push. It slid a yard, turned a slow half circle, and caught the low sun on its varnished hull.

Behind her a car door slammed. Tom from the next farm was coming up the lane with a feed sack on his shoulder, calling out to ask whether she had lost something. She did not turn round. "Only the wind," she said, and watched the little ship drift toward the reeds, bright against the ice, sailing out of a winter that had no sea in it at all.
