Botanical flowers and songbird on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large botanical tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, with a peony bloom at the centre, a lily-like flower below, and a small bird perched among the stems. Leaves, sprigs and small berries fill the edges of the design. The work uses fine, detailed linework with soft grey shading, and the three panels show the piece from different angles on the same arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The old gardener at Hollin Cross had one rule for the spring: nothing gets planted until the wren has sung three times from the gatepost. Her daughter Ysolde was impatient and had already pressed peony roots into the wet ground behind the well, against her mother's word. When the bird finally came, it was not a wren but a small brown thing with a grey throat that flew straight past the gate and into the hedge, and would not sing at all.

That night the peonies opened, huge and heavy as fists, and the lilies came up beside them pale as candles, and every leaf on the bank turned the same silver side to the moon. Ysolde went out in her nightdress to see. The bird was sitting in the middle of the bloom, watching her with a bead of an eye, and when she reached for it the petals shivered and let out a smell of rain and cut grass.
Her mother found them at dawn, the girl asleep with her cheek against a stem and the bird tucked under her chin. Neither of them spoke of it. The garden grew that year the way it had never grown before, every sprig full of berries, and the bird came back each spring to sit on the gatepost and say nothing at all, which the gardener said was the wisest song she had ever heard.
