Botanical flowers on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a cluster of wildflowers, including a branching sprig of tiny blooms, several leaves and two large open flowers with ruffled petals. The linework is fine and even, with light grey shading inside the petals and leaves. The design climbs diagonally up the outer upper arm, and the plain white background keeps the focus on the ink.

The seed van comes up the lane on a Thursday, and you are the one who carries the trays in from the yard because your father's back has gone again. Mr Pryce from the council wants the verge along the Ashby road sown with poppies before the Coronation bunting goes up, and he wants them by June. You stack the paper packets on the shop counter and sort them by the names your father has pencilled on each flap: Shirley, Field, Corn, and the small blue ones he calls sea pinks, though nothing that grows in this county has ever seen the sea.

Mrs Greaves comes in just after four with a pressed sprig in a handkerchief. It is the grey-lilac stuff that grows on the chalk at the back of the church, and she wants to know if it will take in a clay pot on her kitchen sill. You tell her it is stubborn but it will try. She nods at the poppy packets and asks whether they come back the second year. You say they do, if you leave the seedheads standing and do not tidy them away in August. She pays in coppers, counting them twice, and says that is the thing about flowers, they forgive you for not being there.
That evening you walk out to the Ashby road with the leftover seed rattling in your apron pocket. The tar gives way to dry verge and the verge gives way to nettles, and you kneel where the stones begin and press the tiny black seeds into the dust with your thumb. Behind you the lamps come on in the windows of the terrace. Ahead, the hedge is already heavy with the first red crumpled buds, and you think of how fast those petals fall, how a single morning can open them and a single wind can take them, and how you will still be here in June to count what came up.
