Bottle with sea scene and rose on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A bottle sits upright on the forearm, with a dark sea scene inside it that includes rolling waves and a shadowy creature with a toothed jaw. A red rose with dark green leaves sits at the base of the bottle. The bold black outlines and flat shading are typical of traditional work, with colour limited to greens, reds, and muted blue-greys on pale skin.

The bottle lives on the windowsill of the fourteenth floor, where the lift has been broken since March and the wind comes in sideways off the estuary. Nobody on the landing remembers who first put it there. Your nan says it was Sid, her husband, who worked the trawlers out of Hull before the docks went quiet, and who came home each winter with a bottle he never opened and never explained.

You are nine the first time you take it down. The sea inside has been shaken into a grey swell by years of wind, and something with a toothed jaw is moving under the waves, painted by someone with more patience than sense. Your mum says it's just a fish. You hold it up to the stairwell window and see a red rose and dark leaves pressed against the glass at the bottom, as if the bottle has been planted rather than placed. You put it back exactly where it was, because you can tell it doesn't like being moved.
The council letter comes in October. The block is to be cleared by Christmas, and you're allowed one box for the van. Everything else goes to skips in the car park. You wrap the bottle in a tea towel printed with lighthouses and carry it down fourteen flights, because the lift is still dead, counting the landings where the paint has peeled to bare concrete.
At the bottom, a rose has forced its way up through a crack by the bins, the first red thing you've seen all autumn. You unwrap the bottle and set it on the low wall beside the flower. The light comes through the glass and the sea inside goes still for once, the creature hanging motionless with its jaw open, as if it has finally decided where it belongs.
