The pass had been shut since Tuesday, and by Thursday the Carrick Inn had run out of everything except coal and gossip. Mags Tully kept the bar. Her brother Dessie, who had not thrown a punch in thirty years, sat by the fire with a pair of black gloves across his knees, working the laces loose with his thumb.

"Those were Ray's," she said. "Ray Quill's. He left them on the nail in the back room the night he went down to Glasgow, and he never came back for them."

Dessie kept working the laces. "Ray's been dead ten years, Mags." The snow pressed against the window like a crowd wanting in, and the sign outside creaked on its chain. He had fought Ray once, in the church hall, for a purse of twelve pounds and a bet the whole village still talked about. He had lost on a split eye and a decision he never believed.

He stood, slid his left hand into the glove, and the old leather took his fist with a soft sigh. Ray had had bigger hands. Dessie laughed, a short bark, and said the fight had been fixed by the weather. Then he hung the gloves back on the nail in the back room, and the snow kept falling, and for once neither of them had a word to fill the room.

Mags turned the sign on the door to Closed, though nobody had come through it since morning.
