Buddha and lotus flowers on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A seated Buddha with closed eyes and a raised hand sits in front of a dark circular mandala-style backdrop, with pink lotus flowers rising behind the head and below the hands. The Buddha is shaded in smooth greys and black with soft highlights, while the lotus petals carry pink and peach colour. Three photographs show the same arm piece from different angles, with a short quotation lettered in black along the lower band.

The nets had been wet three days running when Teodor Hale stopped shouting at the weather and sat down on the quay with his back to the wind. His brother Ansel had gone to light a candle in the chapel for the Marigold, twelve hours overdue, and the harbour boy kept running to the end of the breakwater and back.

Old Mother Irrin came down the steps with a lantern in her hand, pleated paper pink as a shell. She sat beside him and told him what her grandmother had told her about a seated man in a far country who sat under a fig tree while the storms gave up on him. Asked how to find calm, he did not point at the water. He raised one hand, palm out, and said, peace comes from within, so do not go seeking it without.

Teodor laughed, then stopped. He walked down to the slip, climbed into the skiff nobody had bailed since autumn, and rowed out past the bar in the dark. When the swell lifted him he did not grip the oars. He sat in the stern, raised his right hand the way the carved figure on the chapel door held his, and breathed slowly, counting the harbour lamps as they wavered and came back.

At first light the Marigold came round the headland under reefed sail, and Ansel swore he saw a steady pink glow in the bow of the skiff, a lantern no one had lit. Asked how he had kept afloat, Teodor only shrugged and said he had been waiting for the sea to notice him sitting still. Mother Irrin's paper lantern still hangs on her sill, and nobody in Kestle has ever seen it blown out.
