Butterflies and cherry blossom on an upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A branch with pink cherry blossoms and buds runs diagonally across the upper arm, with a blue butterfly near the top and an orange and black monarch butterfly lower down. The butterflies have soft shading and highlights to give them depth, while the branch and blossoms use darker outlines and gentle pink tones. The bright blue and orange wings stand out against the pale skin and the pink flowers.

Now sit still, all of you, and mind the sticky bit on the bench. Old Mrs Tully's orchard had one cherry tree that bloomed out of season every year, the week before the first frost, and the bees gave it up as a bad job. That was the year the blue one came over the hedge.

The blue one had come a very long way, she said, from a forest where the rain never stopped, and she had never once in her life seen a branch with nothing on it. She landed on the cherry bough as if she owned the tree. The monarch was already there, her wings cracked at the edges from the crossing and folded shut like a letter nobody had answered. They sat on the same twig all afternoon without a word between them, because a monarch does not speak to a stranger who looks that proud, and a proud thing does not ask a tired one for help.

Then the wind came up off the Medway and shook the blossom loose, pink snow all over the grass. The blue one's wings went dark in the shade while the orange one caught the last of the sun. Mrs Tully swore the monarch kept a little of that light for the rest of the winter. I won't tell you it was magic. I'll tell you the two of them flew south together in October, which nobody had told them to do.

And when the blossom came back the next spring, there was a monarch on the lowest bough and a patch of blue in the grass shadow below, and Mrs Tully left the gate open for both of them. Now, who's got the last of the biscuits?
