Traditional style colour tattoo of two red cherries with green leaves and a purple ribbon banner reading CHERRY BOMB, on skin.

Cherry bomb banner with twin cherries

Traditional · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two glossy red cherries joined by stems that rise to a cluster of green and yellow-green leaves. A purple ribbon banner with a dark outline crosses the stems and carries the words CHERRY BOMB in black capitals. Bold black outlines, white highlights on the fruit and soft shading on the ribbon give a classic flat, graphic look against the skin.

The cherry bomb went off under Ray's moped at quarter past ten, which was exactly where Dot had told him to leave it. Nobody was hurt. A cloud of pink smoke rolled across the car park at Westcliff, the brass band stopped mid-bar, and Dot stood by the ice cream van with a paper bag of sour cherries and did not look guilty at all.

Her uncle had sold fireworks off the back of a lorry since before the war, and he kept the good stock in a biscuit tin under the seat. Dot had nicked three the week before. Ray owed her a favour from the summer his brother pinched her bicycle, and she had collected it in the only currency her family trusted: a pound of cherries, a box of matches and a silence that could last a whole Sunday.

When the smoke cleared, the council man was waiting with his clipboard and a face like a boiled egg. Ray was hopping on one foot, trying to look like a lad who had never heard of a fuse. Dot pressed a cherry into his palm, the red one with the white shine down its side, and told him a bomb only goes off once if nobody gives it something to hold on to. He didn't understand. She didn't explain.

Afterwards she tied the spare ribbon from the raffle table round the last cherry's stalk and hung it from the van's wing mirror, where it flicked at every bend all the way to Margate. Ray followed on his mended moped for three miles before he gave up and turned for home, which was the first sensible thing he had done all summer.
