Dilys had been painting skies for the Ferrier Brothers' fair since the spring the caravans came up the valley road. Every town got the same backdrop, nine feet of canvas stretched behind the dodgems and worked in lavender and bruise-blue, the clouds heaped like carded wool. Nobody looked at the clouds. They looked at the lights, and the lights were the point.

The swallows came in June. They found the gap under the ticket booth roof and by August there were four nests and a chattering every morning like a kettle left on. Ruben, who ran the waltzer, said they weren't on the rota and would have to go. Dilys said they had been there before the fair and would be there after it. He said that was the trouble with birds. She went up the ladder that evening with a pot of white and a fine brush and painted two more swallows into the clouds above the booth, pale against the violet, so the real ones would have something to keep them company.

In October they struck the fair in Salisbury in a wind that took the bunting clean off the poles. Dilys rolled the backdrop tight and carried it to the lorry herself. When she lifted the last fold, a swallow was sitting on the edge of the canvas, right on the painted cloud, its head turned towards the field. It watched her for a while, then stepped onto the wood of the ramp and walked down into the dark of the trailer as if it had paid for a ticket.
