Compass and leaves on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A compass with a fine chain loop sits inside a pocket watch style case, with dark leaves and a flower spreading from its base. The linework is detailed and the shading is soft, with strong contrast in the compass needle and the leaves. The black and white close-up shows the tattoo across the upper arm, filling the centre of the frame.

Dear Tamsin,

The needle has stopped pointing at Home. I noticed at the start of the night shift, when the chart table lamp hummed and the brass case trembled against its chain. For nine years it has swung toward the green star the captain still calls our destination. This morning it simply stopped, pointing down at the hydroponic bay like a dog that has found the bone.

You will remember Mother's watch. She kept a sprig of rosemary pressed behind the glass, and a seed nobody on the Hesper could name, wrapped in waxed paper that crumbled when I opened it last week. I planted it in the corner tray where the lettuce keeps dying. Three days later it had two dark leaves shaped like arrowheads, and a flower like a tiny brass button that opens only when the lights dim for sleep.

I carried the compass down to the bay expecting a fault in the magnetics. Instead the needle swung round to the pot and held there, steady as a bearing I was meant to follow. The engineers insist we are drifting with no course, but I stood in the warm wet air with the leaves brushing my wrist and understood that the drift was never the problem. We were not heading for a star. We were looking for ground that would grow something.

I have not told the captain yet. She will want to log it as a fault. Tomorrow I will wind the watch, close the cracked glass over the seed, and carry the whole thing down to the tray. If the needle still points there, I will not argue with it.

Yours, always, Isla
