Constellation tattoo on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind, with her hair in a loose bun, shows a small constellation tattoo on her upper back near the shoulder blade. The star points are joined by thin single black lines, forming a diamond-like cluster and a longer arc. The plain pale wall behind her keeps the focus on the skin and the delicate ink.

Sit closer, the fire won't argue with you twice. No, that one by the pot is for the goat-herd's boy, he's had enough tea. Now. The pass between the two valleys has no sign on it, only a cairn that the frost keeps knocking over, and the men who guard the left side have never once been told which stones belong to whom.

Old Teodor came up it the winter his wife went quiet. He carried a sack of salt and a letter he could not read, because the priest had written it in a hand nobody in the village trusted. The cloud came down at noon and took the path. He stopped where the rock splits and did what his father taught him: he lay on his back in the snow and looked for the stars that never move, the ones that hang over the cold north like a slate-cutter's chisel.

He found four of them and lost the rest in his own breath. So he did a foolish thing. He traced what he could see with one finger against the blankness, a small diamond of light and a long tail running off from it, and he said each name aloud the way his mother taught him to pray. Then he walked that shape the way a star would walk, and the cloud thinned, and there was the cairn exactly where the arc ended.

They say the guards on the far side still watch for a man lying in the snow with his arm raised. Nobody goes out to meet him. They leave the lantern lit and count the stars over the ridge, and if the count comes out right, they let him through.
