Black fine line cross with cursive script reading Matthew 6:31, tattooed on the upper back beside the shoulder blade.

Cross and Matthew 6:31 on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black cross with uneven, slightly sketchy linework sits on the upper back near the shoulder blade. Beside its crossbar, cursive script reads Matthew 6:31 in dark ink. The photo is taken indoors with warm lighting, and the tattoo is the clear focus against the skin.

Sit yourself down by the range and mind the cat, she's been sulking since Tuesday. You want the winter the oil ran low on Scarrow Rock? Right, then listen, because I'll not tell it twice.

Amos Pell kept the light there, and he kept his worries the same way he kept his lamp, trimmed and burning all night. Forty-one tins of paraffin sat in the store, and every evening he worked the sums on the back of a tide table. How many nights to the March boat? How much flour? Would the landing hold in a south-westerly? His wife wrote to him that he'd wear a groove in the floorboards pacing about. Each night before bed he scratched a little cross in the frost on the lantern glass with his thumbnail, the way his mother had done in her kitchen window, and it never once made the sums come out any kinder.

Then came the morning after the big blow, and the sea had gone the colour of pewter. Down on the shingle lay a sealed iron drum from some coaster sunk off the Skerries, and beside it a second, and a third. Amos stood up to his knees in the wrack and laughed till he had to sit on a rock. Paraffin, every drum of it, sound as a bell.

So the light burned all that winter and the next spring, and the keepers who came after him swore the glass still had a faint cross scratched in the corner. I've never seen it myself, mind, but I believe it. Pass me that kettle, would you? The light's coming on out there now, and I can see it from the window.
