Cross with roses and ribbon flash design
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A vertical cross rendered in grey shading with metallic highlights is wrapped by two gold ribbon banners. Two pink roses with green leaves sit at the top left and lower right, framed by black sweeping vine linework. The design is coloured in mixed tones on a pale sheet, with the motif centred and filling most of the frame.

Right, sit down, the lot of you, before the sausage rolls go cold. Forty years I have stood in this hall telling you lot off, and I'm not stopping now just because some of you have gone grey where you used to have sense.

Do you remember Mr Pardoe's wall? The one behind the caretaker's shed, where the bramble came over the brickwork every July? Every spring that man tied a cross of old iron to the fence post with baler twine, and every spring a bloke from the council came round and pulled it down. Nobody ever asked why. Pardoe just came back with another one, wrapped in a strip of gold ribbon he'd nicked from the church bunting, and two roses from the cutting bed he swore were his late wife's.
Then Ellen Marsh let the ribbon blow into the pond, and that was the end of the summer's peace. Pardoe went in after it up to his knees, cursing like a docker, and came out holding the ribbon in one hand and the cross in the other, with the vine's black thorns tangled round his wrists as if he'd been caught in a net.
He never did say what the cross was for. I asked him once, years after we'd left. He just looked at the wall and said the roses come back every year whether anybody asks them to or not.
Now, who's for another round? Ellen, you owe me a ribbon.
