The snow had been down a week when Mab's father came in from the far field with his hands white to the wrist and said the ewes were fine but the north wall had gone again. She didn't answer him. She stood at the window with the dandelion clock she had picked in October, pressed flat in her mother's almanac, and she was counting the seeds left on it.

There were nine. Her mother had told her, the summer before the fever took her, that every seed was a wish that had not yet decided where to land. Mab had never believed it, but she had kept the head anyway, and now she took it down and held it up to the lamp so the light came through the little stalks.

She made a basket from willow cut out of the hedge, no bigger than a thimble, and tied it under the clock with red wool. Then she walked up the lane to the hill where the wind came down off the moor. The seeds lifted one at a time, slow as thinking. The first cleared the wall, the second caught on the gate, and the seventh she let go with the basket still hanging underneath, because a wish carrying its own basket goes further than one that travels light.

At first light the north wall stood whole and the frost on the stones had no footprints near it. Mab found the willow basket in the hedge, empty, with a single seed stuck to the glass of the window. Her father said nothing about the wall. He only put the kettle on and remarked that the wind had come round early this year.
