DNA double helix sketch

Black and grey · Flash

A vertical double helix drawn in bold, sketchy black ink with broken, overlapping strokes. The two strands cross at regular intervals, joined by horizontal rungs that shade slightly where they meet the curves. The design is shown in black ink only on a warm, sepia-toned paper background with a dark vignette around the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Your father wanted the lighthouse stairs mended before the spring gales, and I told him a single stair would serve. Mr Pascoe would have none of it. He wanted two flights wound around one iron column, so that a keeper climbing to the lamp and a boy coming down with the oil could pass each other on the same turn and never once lay a hand on the same rail.

I spent that winter at the forge in Penzance, beating out the treads and bending the strings into their slow curves. I drew the thing first on the back of a tide table, two thin ladders twisting up through each other, joined by short bars like the rungs of a rope bridge. Every bar I welded to the column I thought of the two of them, close enough to hear each other's boots through the stone, never close enough to meet.

When the stairs went in that March, Pascoe climbed while I held the lamp at the foot. Halfway up, through the gaps between the treads, I saw a pair of boots coming down the far spiral toward me. Neither of us stopped. We passed at the centre of the turn, a hand's width apart, the iron bars gleaming on either side of us like the spokes of a wheel turning in both directions at once.

He never said whether the design was clever or foolish. The boy sailed for Newlyn that summer and did not come back up the stairs. I still see the drawing when I shut my eyes: two rails going round and round, never touching the same step, and the little bars holding them together in the dark.
