Dotwork anatomical heart with green leaves on the chest
Dotwork · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A stippled anatomical heart with a sprig of green leaves growing from its top, and a small ornate panel with a vertical bar set into the heart's lower half. The heart is built from dense dots and fine shading in grey and black, while the leaves are filled with green dotted shading and show a soft gradient. The tattoo is photographed closely on pale skin at the centre of the upper chest, with dark fabric visible at the top edges of the frame.

The dotted hills above Thessaly were the only place Nikandros had ever seen a fig tree split its own bark, so when the wagon axle snapped below the pass he sat down in the dust and waited for the tinker to finish swearing. The sealed clay box in his lap had been warm since dawn. Inside, wrapped in wet wool, lay a cutting from the old tree at his mother's door, and the wool had to stay damp or the cutting would die before the rain came.

The tinker, a broad man called Demas who had never been sober after noon, levered the axle free with a length of ash and peered at the box. He asked whether it held a heart or a fig, since he could not tell the difference in the dark. Nikandros lifted the lid to check the leaves, and the little green fan of them had turned toward the light as though it had been waiting all morning to be seen.
At the foot of the valley the inn at Kalyvia had a yard full of rainwater. Its keeper, a woman with ink on her knuckles, asked if he meant to sell the thing or plant it. He said he had promised it to a widow in Larissa who had lost her husband and her orchard in one winter. The keeper shook her head and said nobody plants a heart, you only keep it beating.
He did not sell it. Past the bridge he prised the horn grille from the lid, the one his grandfather had fitted so the sap could be watched, and set the cutting in the soft earth of a ditch where the road bent east. Three days later he walked back alone. The leaves had pushed through the gaps where the grille had been, hanging over the ditch like open hands, freckled with rain, and he understood then that the box had never been what kept it alive.
