Dotwork star cluster on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with her head turned away lifts one arm, showing a cluster of small black dots arranged in a scattered, star-like pattern on the inner upper arm. The dots are fine and evenly spaced, with a few larger points forming a loose vertical trail. The black and white photograph uses soft studio lighting against a dark grey background, and the loose white tank top sits in the lower frame.

Skipper Dunn wanted to turn for the bell buoy. Ada had heard it too, a long way off and in the wrong place. She told him the bell was on the wrong side of the wind. He laughed, then stopped laughing when the cloud tore open for a breath and she pointed. Five stars in a loose line, then a scatter like flour thrown on dark cloth. "Hold that bearing," she said. "We go home along it."

They ran on the line of those dots until the fog thinned and the cliffs came up grey and ordinary as a kitchen table. Nobody cheered. Dunn passed her the tin of boiled sweets he kept for storms and never for anyone else. Later, in the galley, she pricked the same pattern into the back of the almanac with a darning needle, one dot for each star, the way her father had taught her, so the next girl on the next wrong night would know where to look.
