Dragon and castle back piece

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large back piece shows a horned dragon head with spread wings, rendered in detailed shading. Swirling smoke fills the background, and a castle with spires appears at the lower edge. The work is entirely in black and grey, with soft gradients in the smoke and sharper contrast on the dragon's scales and horns.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The smoke came down off the Carrow Hills the week my father stopped speaking to the bells. It rolled into Millbrook grey as wet slate and sat in the lanes until the bakers lit their lamps at noon. Nobody could see the castle any more, only the spires poking through now and then like bent nails, and my mother said the old dragon had finally woken to find us all too small to bother with.

I went up the hill on the third morning with a lantern and my father's tuning fork in my apron pocket. The track was slick with ash that didn't feel like ash. At the gate the smoke thinned enough to show me the dragon, folded across the battlements with its wings spread wide over the valley like a second sky. Its horns were chipped and silver at the tips. Its great eye, half shut, watched me the way a dog watches a man with a coat over his arm.

I had nothing clever to say, so I struck the fork against my knee and held it to the stone. The note went out thin and steady, the same note my father used to hum over the bell frames while he worked the iron. The dragon's breath stopped. It lowered its head until its jaw rested on the cobbles, and I saw that the smoke was pouring out of the scales themselves, slowly, the way a kettle goes quiet once it has boiled.

By the next morning the mist had gone back into the hills and the spires stood clear against a pale sky. Up on the wall a dragon's shape was still there, inked in black and grey across the stone, and my father was at the bell frame again, humming under his breath as he tightened the last bolt.
