Bev Ashdown arrived at the Crown forty minutes late, carrying a foil tray of flapjack she'd clearly made at six that morning. Nobody knew her until she laughed, that flat Yorkshire honk we used to mock in double maths, and then the whole back room turned round at once.

In 1998 she drew elephants on everything. Biro on the flap of her pencil case, on the inside cover of her planner, on the back of my hand during a mock exam when I'd lent her my last working pen. It was always the same pair: a big one with its trunk curled low, and a small one pressed close against its flank, as if it was being walked home from somewhere it wasn't supposed to be.

We talked about the old teachers, Mr Pinder's terrible ties, and who had married whom in the Co-op car park. Then she went quiet and turned her phone face down on the table, and I understood she'd been waiting all evening to tell me something. Her eldest had come three weeks early, in the back of a taxi on the Dewsbury Road, and the midwife had sketched the cord on the paper sick bag because nothing else was to hand. Bev still had it in her purse.

She got up to fetch more lemonade and I noticed the tray was still on the table, the flapjack already cut into neat squares. Nobody had touched it. I took one, and it was the same as it had always been, too sweet and slightly burnt at the edges, and I ate it slowly while she argued with the barman about ice.
