Black and grey ornamental tattoos of an elephant and a cat in decorative headdresses, covering the outer thigh.

Elephant and cat thigh tattoos

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Two large tattoos sit side by side on a thigh: an elephant portrait on the left and a cat portrait on the right, each framed by intricate mandala-style ornament and jewelled headdresses. The elephant's trunk curls downward and both animals are rendered with soft shading and fine stippled detail. The work is entirely in black ink and greys, and the ornament fills the space down to the knee area.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lift in Carrow House gave up somewhere between the fourth and fifth floors, the way it always did when it was carrying shopping, and I stood in the steel box with a bag of onions and listened to the cables tick like a clock that had forgotten the time. Mrs Abara from 9B was with me, holding a carrier bag that clinked with brass bells she was taking to her sister in Leicester. She didn't mind the dark. She said the lift had been stopping like this since before her husband died, and that it was only sulking.

She told me about the elephant on the bells, a painted god with a trunk that curled the way a question does, who had once carried a stray cat across a flooded market in a city she would not name because the name had gone soft in her mouth. The cat, she said, had ridden the whole way on the elephant's head, hat-wearing and unimpressed, judging the rain. Every time the elephant stopped to rest, the cat would stand up and walk along his brow as if the crown were a road. I asked whether the elephant ever minded. She laughed and said the elephant had asked for it, which was the sort of thing she said when she meant the opposite.

The lights flickered, then the cables gave a long shudder and we dropped an inch before catching. In the faint orange glow I saw a cat sitting on the handrail, grey as ash, with a jewelled collar catching the light. Mrs Abara didn't look surprised. The doors opened on the ninth floor, and the cat stepped out first, tail high, and walked straight towards her door. Her bag of bells rang once, softly, as if someone had answered.
