Elephant head with mandalas and script

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows an elephant head facing forward, with its trunk curled to the right and tusks visible. Mandala motifs sit on its forehead and ears, a sunflower and blossoming branches frame the sides, and dotted chains hang beneath the head. The words truth, beauty, freedom and love are written in looping script across the lower left, all in black linework on white paper.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third week of September the sunflowers along the south wall had gone over, their heads bowed like wet lanterns, and Edwin still wanted the bed cleared before the first frost. You were on your knees with a trowel when the lorry ground up the lane, and you heard the chains before you saw her. Sabitha came through the side gate with her trunk curled upward and a sprig of apple blossom caught in its tip, as if she had been sent ahead to inspect the place and found it wanting.

Edwin had bought her from a travelling show that folded in Ipswich, on the understanding that she would never again be asked to stand on a painted drum. She liked the walled garden. Each morning Ruth from the next village painted a small circle on her forehead in henna, a different pattern every day, and Sabitha stood still for it the way some people stand for a hymn. The words on the gatepost were Edwin's idea, lettered in black by a sign painter who charged him double for the flourishes: truth, beauty, freedom, love. He read them aloud to her once, and she flapped her ears as if she had heard enough.

That night the gate stood open. In the morning there were prints in the dew all the way down the lane, and you found her in the field behind the church, standing among the sunflowers the parish had planted for the summer fête. She had one trunk wrapped around a stalk, not pulling, just holding it, the way you hold a hand you are not yet ready to let go of.

You walked her home with a rope you never tied. At the gate she stopped, turned her great grey head, and looked at you until you understood she was asking for nothing more than the lane for another hour. You left the gate as it was. At breakfast Edwin said nothing about it, and neither did you.
