Embracing skeletons on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two skeletons in an embrace, one with its arms wrapped around the other and their skulls close together as if kissing. The rib cages, arm bones and skulls are shaded in soft greys with darker recesses and highlights that give them depth. The design fills most of the frame on a bare thigh, with a pale yellow-green garment visible at the top edge.

Sit closer to the fire, the wind up here likes to listen in. You want the end first, do you? Very well. They were found in the spring, when the snow had gone off the Hollin Pass and the carriers came through again. One was a ropemaker's daughter called Aud and the other a mule-driver named Teodor, and they had walked the high road together for eleven winters, which in those days was the same as being married.

Their trouble was the weather. The pass closed without warning, a grey wall rolling over the ridge, and every traveller caught out sat down to wait for the thaw. Teodor had one rule, that he never let go of the lead rope, and Aud had another, that she never let go of Teodor. So when the blizzard came in the autumn of the great frost, they stood in the lee of the cairn with the animals pressed against them and held on, one arm each around the other's ribs, faces close because there was nothing to look at but each other's eyes through the ice.
The carriers say the mules came down alone three days later. Nobody goes up that road now without a bell on the harness, and nobody sings beside the cairn. But in the thaw they found the pair of them standing as you'd stand at a dance, skulls tipped together, the rope still knotted round Teodor's wrist.
