Eppur Si Muove across the upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of the upper back shows the words Eppur Si Muove tattooed in black blackletter script, spanning from one shoulder blade area to the other. The letters have bold strokes, decorative flourishes and a few swash details on the capitals. The ink is solid black on pale skin with some freckles and light marks visible, and the framing is centred with the head cropped at the top.

The council voted the ring had stopped at the forty-third assembly, and by the next shift half of Hollin Deck had stopped feeling the floor pull. Nobody argued with the gauges. The gauges said zero. I said nothing, because I was on the night watch with the spin-clock in my hands, and the spin-clock said otherwise, one tick at a time.

Old Auden Varga kept that clock before me. When I was an apprentice she showed me the brass plate he had cut into the housing, letters so black and spiky they looked like barbed wire, and she read them out in the stiff voice she saved for the dead. Eppur si muove. He had copied it from a book nobody had opened since the hydroponics failed, about a man made to swear the world stood still who muttered the truth under his breath anyway.
So I did what Auden would have done. I took the chalk to the bulkhead beside the galley, where the council could not avoid it, and wrote the words in the old hand with their curled capitals. By the second bell a line of people stood there with their cups, reading, and one by one they lifted their heads to the ceiling, where the seams ran past them like the rim of a wheel.
The spin-clock ticked. Under my palm the deck gave its small, honest lean toward the outer wall, the way it always had. I pressed my hand flat against the cold metal and felt it going on, and for the moment that was enough to be going on with.
