The lift at Carrow House had eleven buttons, and the twelfth was only a brass circle with a hole in the middle, painted over so many times that the hole was all that was left of it. Nobody on the ninth floor pressed it. Mrs Adeyemi, who kept the spare keys in a biscuit tin, said a boy called Kit had once pushed his finger into that hole, and something had looked back at him.

Kit had been sent up to the roof with a tenner for the man who came round on Fridays, and the stairwell was dark because the bulbs had gone the winter before. He met a grey cat on the landing with one yellow eye and one eye that was only a split of white. It walked ahead of him up eleven flights without once looking back. On the roof, under a tarpaulin, there was a tin, and in the tin was an eye of black ink on a scrap of sheet metal, worn and speckled as old paint. The cat sat on it and would not move until Kit said he would bring it home.

He carried it down in his cupped hands, though it weighed nothing, and by the time he reached the ninth floor his own eyes were stinging. He pressed the eye into the brass circle and the lift shuddered, and far below the whole block seemed to turn its face towards the street, the way a person turns to hear a name called.

Kit never told anyone what he had lost on the stairs that night. The circle stayed bright after that, and the lifts stopped jamming, and the frost never once cracked the concrete. Nobody pressed the button, because the eye was not for pressing.
