Feather and Roman numerals on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black feather sits above a row of Roman numerals reading VII, XIV and XIII, all tattooed on the inner wrist. The feather has fine, detailed barbs with solid black shading along one side and a lighter highlight near the quill. The image is a close, evenly lit photo on a plain skin tone against a dark background, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Dear Brother Anselm,

The goose that gave me this quill died in the November frost, so I have been writing with the grey feather of a crow ever since. The novices say it is a bad omen. I say it is merely untidy. Forgive the blots. My hand is not what it was when you taught me the uncial, and the candles in the lower scriptorium smoke so badly that I cannot tell a vellum edge from a shadow.
Your copy of the Psalter came back from the binder on Tuesday. Brother Osric swears he has numbered the leaves correctly, but the marks in the margin read VII, then XIV, then XIII, and I could not make sense of them until I counted. Seven psalms for Prime, fourteen for the vigil, thirteen for Compline. He has set a small feather above the numerals, pointing the way like a pen that has learned to walk.
I did not tell Osric this, but I kept the stray barb he left on the desk. When I draw the feather's spine across a page it still catches the light from the window, and I think of how the bird must have held itself on the wind before it fell. Come before the feast of Saint Gall if the roads allow. I will have a fresh quill cut for you, and the numerals will be finished by then, I promise, in good black ink.
Your servant in Christ, Brother Wulfric
