I found a feather on the back step this afternoon, grey and ragged at one edge, the kind the pigeons drop by the bins on Clarke Street. I nearly swept it away. Then I thought of the kestrel chick you found in the lane, the one you fed with a pipette for a fortnight, and how you cried when it finally went up over the chapel roof without looking back. I stood there with the brush in my hand and told myself that is what good parents are for.

So here is the thing I didn't say at the station. Your wings were ready. They always were, from the time you were four and jumped off the garden wall to see what would happen. I just needed a minute longer with my own heart before it caught up.

Ring me Sunday. Eat something green. The feather is in the envelope.

Love, Mum
