Feathers and compass on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A vertical design of three feathers rises above a compass rose with the letters S and N marking its north and south points. The feathers have striped and patterned vanes in pink, purple, blue and yellow, while the compass rings use dotted and fine black linework. Soft colour washes bleed beyond the outlines, and the tattoo sits centrally on the forearm against a plain light background.

Ada had fed the hens and broken the ice on the trough twice before the wind dropped enough to hear the geese going over. They came low that morning, grey and loud, and one of them lost a feather that turned over and over in the air before it landed by the gate. It was striped black and yellow like a wasp's back, and when she picked it up it was warm.

Her father had a brass compass nailed inside the barn door, a thing his own father had carried to sea and never once used on land. Its needle would not settle. Ada held the feather up beside it, and the needle swung and stopped, pointing at the quill, then at the frost-white field beyond the hedge, then at the empty sky where the geese had gone.
She took the feather down the lane to the old well, where the stone lip was worn smooth by years of hands, and she dropped it in. The water was black and still. For a long time nothing happened. Then the skin of ice cracked in a straight line, north to south, the way a needle would point if it had been told the truth, and the feather rose through the water with its colours running pink and blue like paint on wet paper.
She followed the crack across the fields until dusk brought her to the cold hill where the geese nested. On a flat stone at the top lay three feathers in a neat row, each one brighter than the last. She gathered them up, and they were warm too, and when she looked back the farm was a small dark square with one lit window, and the needle in her pocket had stopped trembling.
