Fish and mountains in a diamond frame

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large fish is shown swimming diagonally, with its body and fins rendered in fine hatching and stippled scales. Inside a white circle cut into the fish's body sits a small mountain range, and the fish is surrounded by thin diamond outlines, dotted arcs and solid dots. The work is entirely black ink and grey shading, with a clean, balanced composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been measuring the lake for three weeks with a chain and a brass theodolite that belonged to your grandmother, and every morning the bream rises to the same spot a little north of the jetty, as if it has been asked to hold still for the survey. The valley agents want a boundary drawn across the water, and they want it square. You want it true, which turns out to be harder. The old map shows the lake as a diamond with a hole cut through its middle where a mountain should be, and nobody in the village will say who drew it.

Tomas Hale, who rows the far shore at dawn, tells you the bream is older than the dam. He says that when the snow comes down off the Corran ridge, the fish swallow the peaks whole, one per winter, and keep them in their bellies until spring, when they cough them up into the shallows. You write this down because your notebook has room and your patience does not. He lifts a fish from his bucket and turns it to the light, and you see a grey ridge pressed beneath the pale, sharp-scaled flank, like a bruise shaped like a range.

You decide to open it. Not with a knife but with the chain, working the links slowly through the gills until the mountain slides out in one clean curve of silt and water. It is small enough to sit in your palm, and it is exactly the shape of the ridge behind the village, sharpened to the edge of a drawing, its peaks catching a light that does not seem to come from anywhere.

That evening you draw the boundary on the agents' map and it runs along the water without cutting anything at all. You keep the mountain on the windowsill, damp and patient, and by morning a thin line of snow has settled along its crest. Tomas laughs when you tell him. Out at the jetty the bream rises, unhurried, and you write the last figure down the way you were taught: true, and not square at all.
