Flying superhero on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo shows a female superhero figure in a diving or flying pose, with long wavy blue hair, a blue top with white stars, and red boots. Thin orange swirling lines loop around the figure, and red and blue ink splashes trail behind it. The soft, painterly shading and blended colour give it a watercolour-like finish, set on the outer thigh.

The lifeboat was called the Marjorie Penhale and she had been on the slipway since Easter with her bow stove in, so when Dessa Trewin came up the hill with a tin of blue and a borrowed brush, nobody thought to stop her. She was seventeen and had been told to sweep the shed. Instead she sat on an upturned crate and watched the light come off the harbour wall, breaking into orange threads on the water before the tide turned.

Her uncle Ned had painted every boat in the cove for forty years and he had one rule, which was that a figure on a bow must look like it was already going somewhere. "Stand still and she'll sink," he said, not looking up from his ledger. So Dessa did not paint a woman standing. She painted her diving off the rail with her hair streaming out behind like a squall, a white star on the bodice and red at the boots, and she loosened the strokes until the paint ran the way spray runs.
The men at the Ship called it foolish. The Penhale went back in the water on the spring tide with the figure facing out to sea. Three weeks later the Marjorie came home in a gale with her crew soaked and singing, and the coxswain swore the new bow had cut through the worst of it like something that had decided to fly.
Ned never said he was proud. He only took the crate off her and sat on it himself, squinting at the orange lines wound around the hull, and muttered that the girl had put them in the wrong place and that it was the best thing on the slip.
