Forget-me-not sprig on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A sprig of blue forget-me-not flowers with small yellow centres and dark navy and green leaves wraps around the forearm close to the wrist. The flowers and leaves are rendered in bold, flat areas of colour with soft shading and defined outlines. Blue dominates the composition, with the greens and yellow accents set against plain pale skin and a dark background.

Dear Ruth, the ewes have started early this year, and the ice on the water trough cracked clean through this morning, so you will forgive the smudges. Dad would have had the lamp lit in the top barn by now. I keep going up there with the torch and finding nothing but straw and the cat asleep on the feed bin.

I went through his coat pockets on Sunday, the brown one that hangs on the back door. There was a seed packet in the inside pocket, creased soft as cloth, the picture of the little blue flowers half rubbed away. Forget-me-not, it said, and underneath in his capitals, FOR THE BANK BY THE GATE. You know the bank. Nothing would grow there after the sheep had been over it, and every April he swore at it anyway.

So I did it on Saturday, on my knees in the wet, pressing the seeds into the mud with my thumb the way he showed us. It is too cold for anything to come up, I know that. But the cutting hook is hanging where he left it and the gate is still stiff, and I thought you should know the seeds are in.

Come at Easter if the lanes are clear. Bring the good kettle. Love, Meg.
