Framed cameo tattoo on a thigh

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The photograph shows a torso and upper thighs wearing black strappy harness-style underwear and a studded garter. A black and grey tattoo sits on the outer right thigh, showing a figure within an ornate oval frame with scrolling detail and foliage. Part of a coloured rose tattoo is visible on the left thigh beneath the garter straps, and the image has a soft, vintage-style colour treatment.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frame came up out of the river silt in the third week of August, when the Pendry orchard was heavy with windfalls and the wasps had given up on the grass. Tam Gorse found it with his boot, a tarnished oval of silver no longer than his palm, scrolled all round with leaves worked by a hand far more patient than his own. Inside the glass a woman turned her face in profile, as though someone behind her had just said her name.

He carried it home in his coat pocket and set it on the mantel, meaning to sell it at Ludlow market. His wife, Edie, rubbed the silver with lemon and salt until the leaves shone. That night the scrolls had grown another curl along the bottom, and the woman's mouth seemed a little less pressed. Tam laughed it off, but by the second morning the frame was warm to the touch, and he found he could not carry it past the orchard gate without his arm going heavy.

So they hung it on the old gatepost where the bindweed grew thickest. Nobody told the frame what the orchard was for, but it knew. Each evening the windfalls rolled down the slope and stopped against the post as neatly as if they had been counted, and the woman inside the silver looked out over the rows toward the farmhouse, watching for someone who had not yet come home.

Then Edie's granddaughter, small and sun-browned, put the first windfall of the year inside the frame, and the glass cleared like breath wiped from a window. The woman smiled, the gate swung open on its own, and every tree in the Pendry orchard bowed its branches low enough to pick.
