A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marguerite had been told not to read the letters, only to lift them from the cold tray and lay them flat on the blotter, but the hand on the third sheet was so careful that she read it anyway. The ink had bled a little at the loops. Someone had written slowly, as if every stroke cost a coin.

The letter came from a woman named Odile Brissac, written in 2061 to a brother in Marseille who had stopped answering. Most of it was complaints about the price of bread and a gutter that leaked over the back step. Then, beneath the signature, Odile had added two lines in a looping script: La vie est faite de petits bonheurs. Marguerite copied them into her notebook without knowing why.

That evening she took the tram home to the flat above the bakery where she lived alone. The window was open and the lace curtain lifted and settled. She thought about the brother, who had probably never received the letter, and about the loaf that had gone stale on Odile's table while she wrote. Not the grand things, the note seemed to say. The small ones. She put the kettle on and stood by the window until it began to tick.

Next morning she carried the sheet to the reading room and set it under the lamp. Before she sealed the sleeve, she pencilled a catalogue number in the corner and, beneath it, the words she had copied, so that whoever opened the box after her would find them too.
