Geometric arrow tattoo on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman wearing a black wide-brimmed hat holds the brim over her face, with both arms raised. A small black tattoo of an arrow built from stacked triangles sits on the inner forearm close to the wrist. The tattoo uses clean solid shapes and simple lines on a plain white background, and the photograph is in colour with the ink appearing dark grey to black.

The lift at Hollins House had been broken since the Tuesday my neighbour's boy taped a cardboard arrow to its doors. Dev Ansah, who was nine and believed in signs, said it pointed to the stairwell, and so for three weeks we all took the stairs, fourteen floors, counting landings like the triangles Dev liked to draw.

He drew them everywhere: on the backs of takeaway menus, in the condensation on the bus shelter, once on my kitchen window in washing-up liquid. Three triangles stacked small to large, then a shaft, then a barb. He said it was a way out. I told him the only way out of Hollins was the one the council eventually decided on, and he said that was rubbish, you just had to point the right direction.
On the twenty-second day the lift came back, and Dev was not in it. He had gone down to the car park with a torch and a roll of tape. I found him at the bottom, taping an arrow onto the concrete pillar under the tower, pointing up toward the flats, the triangles so neat you could have used them for a set square.
I asked him why he'd pointed it at us. He shrugged, the way boys do when the answer is obvious. "So you know which way is home," he said, and went back up the stairs two at a time.
