Geometric dotwork sleeves on arms and chest

Geometric · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A shirtless man with both arms and shoulders covered in black and grey geometric tattoos, including mandala-like rosettes, hexagons and star shapes. The work uses fine dotwork stippling and bold solid blackwork outlines, with patterns shifting in density across the sleeves. The dark background keeps the focus on the tattooed arms and upper chest.

Ada had counted the tiles on platform four so many times that she dreamed in hexagons. Sixty-two rosettes, eleven stars where the old iron stanchions came down, and one cracked hex by the ticket gate that nobody had ever replaced. The tilers from Stoke had laid them in 1889 with a dot punch and a steady hand, stippling each petal until the grey looked like frost on a window.

On the Tuesday the company sent a letter saying the platform was to be relaid in concrete by spring. Ada took the morning off, borrowed Mr Pell's rubbing wax and a stiff brush, and knelt on the cold floor copying the pattern onto squared paper. Trains came and went above her. A porter asked if she had dropped a ring. She said she had dropped the whole station.

By dusk she had forty-one sheets taped together, a mosaic of her own, and a crooked plan. She took them to the signal box where Mr Pell kept his drawing board, and he studied the paper a long time before pointing out the flaw: every fourth star faced the wrong way, as if the first tiler had been testing whether anyone would notice.

Ada laughed until she had to sit down. Then she went back to the platform with a pencil and drew the wrong-way stars in red, and the next morning the inspector found them and let the floor stay.
