Geometric mandala full arm sleeve
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full arm sleeve covers the shoulder, upper arm and forearm with mandala-style rosettes, concentric rings, lattice bands and star-like geometric motifs. The work is built from fine dotwork and stippled shading, with bold black outlines and smooth grey gradients that give depth to the circular panels. The three side-by-side photographs show the sleeve from front, side and back angles against a dark background with a metal grille.

The clock over platform four at Ashbourne Cross had a face like a mandala, rings of brass numerals set inside rings of cream tile, and for nineteen years I was the only man allowed up the ladder to wind it. Nobody else knew the escapement. Nobody else knew that the eight-spoked star at its centre needed a drop of oil every second Sunday or it would sulk and lose a minute a day.

The winter the footbridge grille came down for repair, Mr Okonedo from the depot brought me a roll of drawings. Lattice bands, hexagons, rosettes with petals that folded back on themselves, all pencilled on the backs of old timetables. The council wanted the new tiles in the waiting room to match the clock, and he had decided I was the one who could copy them without a ruler. I said the old pattern had been laid by a man who never once measured anything. He said that was exactly why it worked.
So I spent that winter on my knees with a stencil and a flask of tea, following the spokes out from the centre. By March the waiting room floor looked like the clock had been pressed flat and sent down the stairs. People stopped to look at it and then looked up, and I liked that more than I admitted.
Last Tuesday the clock lost its minute again, as it does when rain finds its way into the ladder housing. I climbed up in the dark, wound it by hand, and watched the 21:14 slide beneath the rosette and out past the signal, exactly on time, which is the only sort of time I have ever known how to keep.
